How to Choose the Right Forklift for Your Business

TLDR

Start with the heaviest load and load center, then power source, tires, mast height, and aisle width. Decide buy, finance, or rent based on hours and how long the need lasts. Wrong specs cost more than a careful quote. Alteon Equipment walks GTA buyers through each step from Mississauga.

Step 1: Capacity and Load Center

Record peak weight, dimensions, and load center. Read plates at the stated center and height (capacity guide).

Step 2: Truck Type

Counterbalance for docks, trailers, open floors. Reach truck for narrow aisle high bay. Order picker for piece/case pick at height. Pallet jack for horizontal staging. Rough terrain / telehandler for outdoor and forward reach (types explained, telehandlers).

Step 3: Electric or Propane (or Diesel)

Indoor emissions-sensitive goes electric. Mixed indoor/outdoor and fast refuel goes propane. Outdoor heavy goes diesel or rough terrain (electric vs propane).

Step 4: Tires and Environment

Cushion for smooth indoor floors. Pneumatic for yard work. Cold storage and corrosive sites need purpose-built packages (cold storage).

Step 5: Mast, Free Lift, Attachments

Match max beam height and door clearances. Specify side shifter or clamps up front so capacity plates stay legal.

Step 6: Aisle Width and Layout

Measure working aisles, not brochure claims. Narrow aisle may force reach trucks over sit-down counterbalance (narrow aisle).

Step 7: Buy, Finance, or Rent

Mistakes We See Repeatedly

Buying max nameplate capacity while ignoring 48-inch loads; electric trucks with no charger plan; counterbalance in aisles that needed reach trucks; no attachment derate on the plate; purchasing for today's SKU set before a known layout change. Walk the floor with a tape measure and the heaviest SKU before you sign.

After the Truck Arrives
